DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) is a national not-for-profit advocacy and public policy organization.  PSR asserts a strong medical voice through education and advocacy to:

  • prevent nuclear war and the development and use of nuclear weapons, and reduce the role of armed force in US foreign and security policy, emphasizing alternative strategies for conflict resolution;
  • reduce the toxic degradation of the environment that threatens human health and;
  • significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to minimize the impacts on the planet and human health caused by global warming.

PSR has a grassroots network of thirty affiliated chapters across the country, sixty-three medical student chapters, over 30,000 members and an additional 22,000 e-activists regularly engaged on PSR’s issues.  PSR is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and is funded by individual contributions and foundation grants.

The Director of Development is responsible for meeting a $2.8 million annual budget through direct mail, grants, and major donor contributions. The Director of Development creates and implements the strategic initiatives required for meeting and exceeding PSR’s fundraising goals. Specifically, the Director will institute a development plan that supports the current base of organizational support while seeking new foundation, corporate, and major donor funding.  The incumbent reports to the Executive Director, is a member of the Executive Management Team (EMT), works closely with the Board Treasurer and Finance Committee, and reports regularly to the Board Executive Committee.  Primary responsibilities are in four areas:  fundraising strategy and implementation, foundation cultivation and grant support, solicitation of major individual and corporate donors, and coordination of PSR’s upcoming 50th Anniversary.

Responsibilities

Fundraising Strategy and Implementation

  • Works with the Development Committee of the Board of Directors and EMT to create and institute a development plan that supports PSR budgetary and reserve requirements,
  • Seeks to expand PSR membership and major donor counts,
  • Cultivates foundation and corporate support,
  • Responsible for all reporting to the Board of Directors,
  • Oversees Direct Marketing Program and supervises Development Program Manager,
  • Supports Board of Directors participation in fundraising activities,
  • Works with PSR Chapter Leaders to develop joint grant opportunities and support development activities of chapters,
  • Evaluates existing fundraising initiatives and suggests new ones as needed.

Foundation Cultivation and Grant Support

  • Ensures that relationship nurturing takes place with existing foundation funders and that new funding opportunities are identified and cultivated— all in coordination with the EMT.
  • Maintains PSR’s standing within its funding community and develops direct relationships with foundation executives and program officers.
  • Develops grant proposals and reports as necessary.

Solicitation of Major Individual and Corporate Donors

  • Responsible for the development and implementation of the Leadership Circle (LC).
  • Develops and conducts major donor cultivation from LC members, existing major donor plan and wealth overlay, and creates new opportunities for major donor funding.
  • Researches corporate donor opportunities, initiates relationship with corporate contacts, and involves EMT and Board of Directors as necessary to secure funding

Coordination of PSR’s 50th Anniversary Programs

  • Works with EMT to develop a promotional plan for the 50th Anniversary celebration.
  • Develops and implements fundraising activities in conjunction with 50th Anniversary.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years professional development-related experience.
  • Must have proven experience cultivating and securing foundation grants, major donors, and/or corporate funding.
  • Must have demonstrated experience in designing and managing development programs.
  • Experience with developing and maintaining productive working relationships with board members, foundation officers and major donors.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team work skills.
  • Background in public health, international relations, disarmament, environment, and or public policy highly desired.

Preference will be given to candidates with foundation and grant-making experience and or experience in major donor fundraising.
